General Info : About Barry Jamison
I have been drawing/painting for over 55 years now . My art medium adventures chronologically (to this stage), began with crayon, and migrated to Pencil, Tempera, Watercolor, Fluorescent water color , permanent marker ,oil pastels, "block" printing, pastels, oils and acrylics.
I have won awards for my Pastel Works (Pastel Society of the West Coast, Sierra Pastel Society, Artist Magazine, Shelter Cove Plein Air, and others) and I've sold quite a few which reside either in this hemisphere or another.
I make my own sanded pastel paper (toned neutral grey) up to 26" x 40"...it has a nice tooth to it. I've made a few pastels as well- a messy undertaking that can produce unique colors. Save your small pieces and when you have enough, grind them up, add a drop or two of water and make your own.

I'd like to say a fond farewell to all who have come through as visitors and students over the last 20+ years. It's very true what is said about learning something: If you really want to learn you must teach. No truer words spoken. I've seen a lot of change around me in the Folsom Foothills area, and also have watched so many students gain a keen understanding of the pastel medium...keep on pastelling!!
So- Thank you all, it's been a gas! My vision has been widened by those who have spent time in my classes.
The Following is my "So Long, Farewell" speech to my students
Hats
When I started Sutter Street Pastels, I didn’t realize how many hats I’d end up wearing throughout these twenty plus years.
I wore an actor’s hat early on- I was a walk-on, trying out the role of an art teacher, trying to remember my lines- and I learned how to take cues from my audience, and ad lib along the way.
I tried out a comedians hat also, and found that it would sometimes fit, other times, it would fall off while I tried to remember a punchline….ohhh well. Not the best fit.
I tried on a therapist hat- at times, it didn’t quite fit, but invariably one of you would help me with adjusting it more comfortably. It helped me- to see myself and others more clearly.
My DJ hat fit well, while I subjected my captive audiences into a mashup exposure of various music styles, ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous. How very patient and forgiving you all have been!
Wearing all of these hats these many years, helped keep my head warm on cold, chilly days, they helped keep the rain off my noggin (when it used to rain!), and made me feel more comfortable during hot sunlit days.
I thank you…
…I take my hat off to you all.
